PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana 2026 - 5 KG Free Food Grains Per Person Per Month Till 2028
Food security is the most fundamental need, and the PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana 2026 (PMGKAY) ensures that no Indian goes hungry. Launched in March 2020 during the COVID-19 lockdown, the scheme provides 5 kg of free food grains (wheat or rice) per person per month to 80 crore ration card holders under the National Food Security Act (NFSA). The scheme was initially meant for a few months, but due to its massive impact on poverty reduction, it has been extended multiple times and is now integrated with NFSA till December 2028. This means for 5 years, every NFSA beneficiary gets 5 kg free food grains every month in addition to their regular NFSA quota, completely free of cost.
What makes this scheme revolutionary is the scale and the zero-cost nature. India has 81.35 crore NFSA beneficiaries - that is more than 60 percent of our population. Under PMGKAY, each one of them gets 5 kg of wheat or rice free, every month, for 5 years. The total annual cost to the government is approximately Rs 2 lakh crore, making it the largest food security programme in the world. For a family of 5, this means 25 kg of free food grains every month - enough to meet the cereal requirement of the entire family. The food grains are distributed through the network of over 5 lakh Fair Price Shops (FPS) across India, using Aadhaar-based biometric authentication.
The One Nation One Ration Card (ONORC) feature makes this even more powerful. A migrant worker from Bihar working in Maharashtra can now go to any Fair Price Shop in Maharashtra with his Bihar ration card and get his free food grains. This was a major problem earlier - migrant workers could not access their PDS benefits in the city where they worked. Now, with ONORC, the ration card is portable across all states and union territories. The authentication happens through Aadhaar biometric at the FPS using an ePOS device, and the food grains are dispensed through electronic weighing scales. Sarkari Notice 247 strongly recommends every NFSA beneficiary to ensure their ration card is active, all family members are added, and Aadhaar is linked.
How to Get PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana 2026 Benefits
- Check if you have a valid NFSA ration card. Visit your state PDS portal or the national portal at nfsa.gov.in to check your ration card status. If you do not have a ration card, apply for one at your local Food and Civil Supplies office or through your state PDS portal.
- Ensure all your family members are added to the ration card. Visit your Fair Price Shop (FPS) dealer or Food and Civil Supplies office with Aadhaar cards of all family members to add them. The free food grains are given per person, so adding all members ensures maximum benefit.
- Ensure Aadhaar is linked with your ration card. This is mandatory for PMGKAY benefits. Visit the FPS or Food and Civil Supplies office with your ration card and Aadhaar cards of all family members to complete the linking.
- Every month, visit your Fair Price Shop (FPS) with your ration card. The FPS dealer will authenticate your identity through Aadhaar biometric (fingerprint or iris scan) using the ePOS device. The free food grains (5 kg per person) will be dispensed through the electronic weighing scale.
- If you are a migrant worker in another state, use the One Nation One Ration Card (ONORC) facility. Visit any Fair Price Shop in the state where you currently live with your home state ration card. The FPS dealer can authenticate you through Aadhaar and give you your free food grains.
- Check the SMS confirmation after every transaction. You will receive an SMS on your registered mobile number with the quantity dispensed, dealer name, and date. If you do not receive the SMS or the quantity is less, immediately complain to the toll-free number 1967 or 14445.
- If you face any issues like dealer demanding money, denying food grains, or giving less quantity, file a complaint on the PDS portal of your state or call the toll-free helpline at 1967. You can also use the PDS mobile app to file complaints and track your transaction history.
