PM Matru Vandana Yojana 2026 - Rs 5000 Cash Benefit for Pregnant and Lactating Mothers

Pregnancy and childbirth come with significant expenses - nutritious food, doctor visits, ultrasound scans, delivery at hospital, baby clothes, and postnatal care. For a poor family, this can push them into debt. The PM Matru Vandana Yojana 2026 (PMMVY) provides Rs 5000 cash benefit to pregnant and lactating mothers for their first living child. The money is paid in three installments tied to pregnancy milestones - registration, ANC checkup, and child birth with immunization. This incentivises pregnant women to register early, get regular checkups, deliver at health facilities, and immunise the child. My cousin wife received all three installments in 2024, and she used the money for protein-rich food during pregnancy and hospital delivery expenses.

The scheme is specifically for the FIRST LIVING CHILD. This is because the government wants to encourage family planning - the cash incentive helps with the first child, and couples are expected to plan subsequent children responsibly. However, the scheme has been expanded under Mission Shakti to also cover second child if the mother is a lactating mother and meets certain conditions. The benefit is paid only to mothers, not fathers, as the money is meant for the mother nutrition and healthcare during pregnancy and lactation.

The enrollment is done at the Anganwadi centre or health facility where the pregnant woman registers. The Anganwadi worker helps with the application form and document submission. Required documents include Aadhaar card of mother, bank passbook (Aadhaar-linked), MCP card (Mother and Child Protection card), husband Aadhaar, and marriage certificate or photograph. The application is verified by the Anganwadi supervisor and approved by the Child Development Project Officer (CDPO). The money is credited directly to the mother Aadhaar-linked bank account through DBT. Sarkari Notice 247 recommends every pregnant woman to register at her nearest Anganwadi centre as early as possible in the pregnancy to ensure she gets all three installments.
