PM Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana 2026 - Rs 2 Lakh Life Insurance for Just Rs 436 Per Year
Life insurance in India used to be a complex product with high premiums, medical tests, and agents chasing you for commission. A typical Rs 2 lakh life cover from a private insurer would cost Rs 3000 to Rs 5000 per year, putting it out of reach for daily wage earners and small farmers. The PM Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana 2026 (PMJJBY) breaks this barrier completely. For just Rs 436 per year - that is less than what you spend on a single movie ticket - you get Rs 2 lakh life insurance cover. The premium is auto-debited from your bank account on 1 June every year, and you do not need any medical test to join. My uncle, a 45-year-old auto driver, enrolled in 2019 and passed away due to a heart attack in 2024. Within 22 days of submitting the claim, my aunt received Rs 2 lakh in her bank account, which she used to pay off his small loans and start a small tailoring business.
What makes PMJJBY special is the simplicity. There is no agent, no commission, no medical exam, and no paperwork beyond a one-page enrollment form. You walk into your bank branch (where you already have an account), fill the form, give consent for auto-debit, and your cover starts. The scheme is administered by LIC and other insurance companies, but the entire enrollment and claim process happens through your bank. The cover is for death due to any cause - natural death, illness, accident, anything. There is no waiting period, no exclusions for pre-existing conditions.
The claim process is where most families struggle because they do not know what to do. If the insured person dies, the nominee should immediately visit the bank branch where the policy was enrolled, submit the death certificate, filled claim form, and cancelled cheque of nominee account. The bank forwards the claim to the insurance company, and the Rs 2 lakh is credited to the nominee account within 30 days. There is no need to chase any agent or insurance office. Sarkari Notice 247 strongly recommends every eligible person between 18 and 50 years to enroll in PMJJBY - it is the cheapest life insurance available anywhere in India, and the peace of mind it gives to your family is priceless.
How to Apply for PM Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana 2026
- Check your eligibility: You should have a savings bank account (Jan Dhan or regular), be aged between 18 and 50 years, and have Aadhaar card linked with your bank account. If you are above 50, you cannot join PMJJBY.
- Visit your bank branch where you have the savings account. You can also apply through Net Banking or mobile banking if your bank offers that facility. Some banks also accept applications at Customer Service Points (CSPs).
- Ask for the PMJJBY enrollment form. The form is just one page. Fill in your name, bank account number, Aadhaar number, mobile number, nominee details (name, relationship, age), and sign the consent for auto-debit of Rs 436 premium.
- Submit the form at the bank counter. The bank officer will verify your details and process the enrollment. The Rs 436 premium will be auto-debited from your savings account on the next working day or on 1 June (if applying before May).
- You will receive an SMS confirmation on your registered mobile number once the premium is debited and the policy is active. The coverage starts from the date of premium debit. Keep this SMS safely as proof of enrollment.
- Keep your nominee informed about the policy. Inform them that in case of your death, they need to visit the bank with the death certificate, claim form, and their bank account details to claim the Rs 2 lakh insurance amount.
- The policy auto-renews every year on 1 June if you have sufficient balance in your account. Ensure you maintain at least Rs 436 in your account on 31 May. If the auto-debit fails due to insufficient balance, the policy lapses and you will need to re-enroll.
