PM Suraksha Bima Yojana 2026 - Rs 2 Lakh Accident Insurance for Just Rs 20 Per Year
Road accidents in India claim over 1.5 lakh lives every year, and many more are left permanently disabled. For a daily wage earner who rides a bike to work, the risk of accident is constant, and the financial impact on the family can be devastating. The PM Suraksha Bima Yojana 2026 (PMSBY) is the cheapest accident insurance available anywhere in India - just Rs 20 per year for Rs 2 lakh cover. That is less than what you pay for a cup of tea. The scheme covers death and permanent disability due to accident, and the premium is auto-debited from your bank account on 1 June every year. A friend of mine, a delivery executive, met with a bike accident in 2024 and lost his right leg. His PMSBY policy gave him Rs 2 lakh within 28 days, which helped him start a small mobile repair shop.
What surprises most people is that PMSBY covers only accidents, not natural death or illness. If the insured dies due to heart attack, cancer, or any disease, the claim is not payable. But if the death is due to a road accident, fall from height, drowning, electric shock, snake bite, or any other accidental cause, the full Rs 2 lakh is paid to the nominee. For permanent total disability (loss of both eyes, both limbs, or combination), Rs 2 lakh is paid. For permanent partial disability (loss of one eye or one limb), Rs 1 lakh is paid. The definition of accident is quite broad and includes most unintended incidents.
The claim process is straightforward but requires quick action. The accident should be reported to the police (FIR is mandatory for road accidents), and the insured or nominee should submit the claim form at the bank branch within 30 days of the accident. The bank will ask for the death certificate (in case of death), disability certificate from a government hospital (in case of disability), FIR copy, post-mortem report (in case of death), and cancelled cheque of the claimant account. The claim is typically settled within 30 days of submitting all documents. Sarkari Notice 247 recommends every bank account holder between 18 and 70 years to enroll in PMSBY - at Rs 20 per year, there is no reason not to have this cover.
How to Apply for PM Suraksha Bima Yojana 2026
- Step 1: Check your eligibility: You should have a savings bank account (any bank), be aged between 18 and 70 years, and have Aadhaar linked with your bank account. You can enroll from only one bank account even if you have multiple accounts.
- Step 2: Visit the bank branch where you have your savings account. You can also apply through Net Banking or mobile banking app of your bank. Some banks also accept applications at Customer Service Points (CSPs) in villages.
- Step 3: Ask for the PMSBY enrollment form. The form is one page. Fill in your name, bank account number, Aadhaar number, mobile number, nominee details (name, relationship, age), and sign the consent for auto-debit of Rs 20 premium.
- Step 4: Submit the form at the bank counter. The bank officer will verify your details and process the enrollment. The Rs 20 premium will be auto-debited from your savings account on the next working day or on 1 June (if applying before May).
- Step 5: You will receive an SMS confirmation on your registered mobile number once the premium is debited and the policy is active. The coverage starts from the date of premium debit. Save this SMS as proof of enrollment.
- Step 6: Inform your nominee about the policy and the claim process. In case of an accident, the nominee (or the insured in case of disability) should immediately file an FIR at the nearest police station and collect all medical documents.
- Step 7: To claim, visit the bank branch with the death certificate (for death) or disability certificate from government hospital (for disability), FIR copy, post-mortem report if applicable, filled claim form, and cancelled cheque of claimant account. The bank forwards the claim to the insurance company and Rs 2 lakh is credited within 30 days.
