PM Ujjwala Yojana 2026 - Free LPG Cooking Gas Connection for BPL Women
For decades, millions of Indian women cooked on wood-fired stoves (chulhas), inhaling smoke equivalent to 400 cigarettes per hour. The World Health Organization estimates that indoor air pollution from such cooking causes 5 lakh deaths in India every year, mostly women and children. The PM Ujjwala Yojana 2026 (PMUY) is a game-changer in this regard. Launched in May 2016, the scheme provides free LPG cooking gas connections to women from BPL families. The beneficiary gets the LPG cylinder, regulator, and stove free of cost, plus the first refill free. Subsequent refills are subsidised. My cousin in rural Bihar was cooking on a chulha till 2019, dealing with constant cough and eye irritation. After getting Ujjwala connection, she says the relief in her daily life is indescribable - no more smoke, no more tearing eyes, no more gathering firewood.
The scheme has been progressively expanded. PMUY 1.0 (2016) targeted 5 crore BPL women. PMUY 2.0 (2021) added another 1 crore migrant families. PMUY 3.0 (2024) removed the BPL criteria entirely - now any household without an LPG connection is eligible, regardless of income. As of 2026, over 9 crore free connections have been released, making this one of the largest clean energy initiatives in the world. The security deposit of Rs 1600 (which is normally charged for an LPG connection) is borne by the government, and the first cylinder refill is also free. Subsequent refills are subsidised through the PAHAL direct benefit transfer scheme, with the subsidy amount credited directly to the woman bank account.
What most beneficiaries do not know is that the LPG connection comes with a Rs 5 lakh accident insurance cover. If any accident occurs due to the LPG cylinder or stove (like a fire or explosion), the insurance company pays up to Rs 5 lakh to the family. The connection is always issued in the name of the woman of the household, which gives her ownership and control over this critical household resource. The subsidy on refills is also credited to the woman bank account, giving her some financial independence. Sarkari Notice 247 strongly recommends every household still cooking on chulha or kerosene to apply for PMUY immediately - it is free, it is healthy, and it transforms daily life for women.
How to Apply for PM Ujjwala Yojana 2026
- ☐ Check your eligibility: You should be an adult woman (18+), your household should not already have an LPG connection, and you should have an Aadhaar card and a bank account linked with Aadhaar. Under PMUY 3.0, BPL certificate is not mandatory.
- ☐ Get your documents ready: Aadhaar card, bank passbook (account should be Aadhaar-linked), passport size photograph, ration card if available, and BPL certificate if applying under PMUY 1.0 or 2.0. For PMUY 3.0, any address proof is sufficient.
- ☐ Visit the official PMUY portal at pmuy.gov.in and click on Apply Online. Alternatively, visit the nearest LPG distributor (Indian Oil, HPCL, or BPCL) with your documents. You can find the nearest distributor on the PMUY portal.
- ☐ Fill the application form with your personal details, Aadhaar number, bank account details, address, and family details. Upload scanned copies of required documents. If applying at the distributor office, submit self-attested photocopies.
- ☐ Choose your preferred LPG company (Indian Oil Indane, HPCL HP Gas, or BPCL Bharat Gas). The distributor will verify your documents and process the application. You will receive an SMS with the application number.
- ☐ Within 7 to 14 days, the LPG distributor will deliver the cylinder, regulator, and stove to your home. The first refill (14.2 kg cylinder) comes free with the connection. The distributor will also help you with the PAHAL subsidy form.
- ☐ Fill the PAHAL form and submit it to the distributor to start receiving subsidy on refills. The subsidy amount (typically Rs 100 to Rs 300 per cylinder) will be credited directly to your Aadhaar-linked bank account after each refill booking. Subsequent refills can be booked through SMS, IVRS, or the LPG company mobile app.
